De Stijl:
This art movement started in the Netherlands in 1917. The founders were Piet Mondrian and Theo von Doesburg. 'De stijl' is Dutch for 'the style', and it is also known as Neoplasticism. The artists of De Stijl simplified their work beyond recognition, reducing them to merely lines and flat planes of colour. The colours used were the three primary colours (blue, red and yellow) and non-colours (black and white). De Stijl was partly a reaction against Art Deco, which was overly decorative, and the creators of De Stijl envisioned it to become a universal visual language appropriate for the modern era. De Stijl became the ultimate style, and effected more than the expected media like painting and sculpture. It effected virtually every art form out there, from architecture to music.

The members of De Stijl viewed it as a means of social and spiritual redemption, and the members of De Stijl embraced a utopian vision of art and its transformative potential. De Stijl emerged largely in response to World War 1.

Example of De Stijl Artwork:
Figure 1.) Composition A, Piet Mondrian, 1920, Oil on canvas, (Commons.wikimedia.org, 2018)
This is a classic example of what De Stijl is. It is over simplified to a point were it is not recognizable as anything other than geometric squares and rectangles. The forms are planes of solid colours outlined with thick, solid black lines. The planes of colour are the primary colours, blue, red, and yellow, and non colours, black and white.

Piet Mondrian created this artwork in 1920. He experimented with Schoenmaekers's mathematical theory in this artwork.

De Stijl continues to influence artists and designers today, and these shoes are an perfect example of just that. The shoes are covered in the blue, red and yellow rectangles that De Stijl is known for. The internet is full of many more examples of art influenced by De Stijl, from dresses to street art, and so much more.
